Compost Toilet Construction!
Our community-built compost toilet is an amazing testament to the skills and dedication of our woodworking community.
A number of months of carefully planning how best to use our fundraised money to build something that would meet the needs of the garden and its visitors, led us to Spring 2026 when we finally began the last phase of our big build!
After briefing the crack team of community builders, the first job was to dismantle the old 'loo. As our name suggests, we never let any good wood go to waste, so when the walls of the old toilet came down we set them aside... they'd already been factored into the plans for the new loo design!
An amazing team of volunteers worked to clean the area, carefully measure things out, prep new panels - including sanding a batch of 80 year-old reclaimed floorboards and giving them a lovely coat of oil - and working together to assemble the new toilet.
Measure Twice, Cut Once!
Our amazing wall assembly team.
Big thanks to JMS ltd Construction who helped us reclaim these floorboards, which are over 100 years old!
Harry contemplates a life through the looking glass
With plenty of space inside to make it accessible for all users, and a skylight roof (using more of the reclaimed Covid-19 screens from our workshop build) the toilet allows the garden to come inside; through tree-dappled sunshine filtering through the ceiling and sprays of greenery in pots by the sink.
And the compost design allows us to be able to recycle more than just wood now - all of our deposits will eventually be used as fertiliser for the garden.
All the way from fundraising to finish, we couldn't have made it happen without our community.
So a huge thank you to everyone who donated, whether it be
with their pounds to get us going,
their energy to help us build,
or even their contributions to future fertiliser,
this loo only happened with you.
